150 celebrities and academics call for fracking debate

150 celebrities, academics, notable figures and other reputable organisations have publicly called for immediate suspension of fracking in the UK until an independent public debate takes place.

This is just a small proportion of the millions in Britain who have serious concerns about fracking.  If we all stand up and demand a reasoned debate, both the fracking industry and the government will be answerable to the people of this country.

In an open letter, here is what they said..

We Need to Talk About Fracking

This is a critical moment for Britain. The government’s plans to introduce fracking will change the UK.

Both the Prime Minister David Cameron and energy minister Michael Fallon have told us to get ready for fracking. Already over 60% of the country could be licensed for fracking and planning rules are being changed to allow for central government to override community objections.

signees The government is telling us that fracking is safe even though it is banned in several European countries and American states. There is substantial evidence showing that fracking causes water stress and risks water and soil contamination, earth tremors and a threat to human, wildlife, bird, fish and lifestock health.

We know that this technology will not bring down fuel bills and will not create a jobs boom but it has the potential to leave a damaging environmental legacy for future generations.

We need to talk about fracking. We the undersigned believe that the government must suspend fracking immediately while a genuinely independent, balanced and thorough public debate is held on the potential dangers this industry holds for the UK.
